Cellulite Reduction by Lingerie

January 17, 2011

While some gadgets really do deliver on their promises, others seem to owe their entire existence to wishful thinking and clever marketing, like the Scala Bio-Fir Anti-Cellulite Pants (see below).

Peach perfect: The Scala Bio-Fir Anti-Cellulite knickers promise to reduce cellulite and cost £25

It seems like women’s prayers have finally been answered – underwear that reduces cellulite and improves body shape has gone on sale in the UK at John Lewis stores.
The range is said to be “scientifically proven to significantly reduce cellulite and encourage inch loss in under 30 days”.
The revolutionary garment’s makers claim active bio-crystals contained within the yarn emit heat energy rays which stimulate cell metabolism, improving blood flow.
This, in turn, stimulates the body’s lymphatic drainage system – melting away the subcutaneous fat layer and toxins responsible for cellulite into liquid that can be excreted.
The Daily Mail reports “Shoppers get knickers in a twist in rush to buy best-selling anti-cellulite £25 control pants”

Cellulite Facts and the Media

Cellulite usually appears between the ages of 25 and 35, and progressively worsens with time. Since more than 80% of women are affected by cellulite, this condition doesn’t make any woman “different”. Unfortunately cellulite topics are considered an embarrassing condition and can even occupy precious major newspaper pages with useless information about sexy celebrities like Donatella Versace and Britney Spears that have been spotted with cellulite.

Cellulite is considered a distressing condition in our era and it affects the emotional state of almost every woman leading to:
• Lower self-esteem
• Fear of embarrassment
• Effects on romantic relationships
• Avoidance or decreased enjoyment of certain activities
• Stress from continual efforts to cover up cellulite
The media is fuelling these upsetting feelings and the outcome is time and money wasted on so-called “magic cures” who promise to remove cellulite.

The “Science” behind the Anti-Cellulite Pants

The Scala Bio-Fir Anti-Cellulite Pants look like regular tights, but contain bio-crystals which heat up on contact with the wearer skin. Although somehow this heat remains undetectable to the customer who wears the pants, it is claimed that this heat results in “improved circulation in the thighs, bottom and stomach, encouraging fat cells to ‘melt’ into a liquid”. That’s right, heat that is so small that you can’t feel it, yet is somehow powerful enough to melt your fat cells under the skin, while causing no damage whatsoever to other skin cells.

This is bit embarrassing, in the last decade medical companies developed various non-invasive and non surgical treatments modalities for cellulite reduction. The gold standard technology emerging after the laser is radiofrequency (RF) treatments. The manufacturers of these professional RF systems recommend that it is only used following a consultation with a doctor by operators who have been specially trained to operate the machines. Treatments which combine radiofrequency treatment with laser or intense pulsed light treatment should only be carried out in clinics licensed by the Healthcare Commission.
And now we have pants generating undetectable heat that melt the fat cells? Is that means every time you go for a run, or a hot shower, or put on a pair of warm pants, your fat cells are melting?
